Note: I had no knowledge of this visit and would have strongly discouraged it because I simply don't like asking uncomfortable questions to criminals.
2nd Note: Spencer was wearing hiking boots, white scrunchy socks, olive green shorts, a Relay for Life t-shirt, a backwards AG Edwards hat, and sunglasses at the time.
So Spencer approached the house and a few people started to scatter. He called them back and threw every tactic in the book to get the wheels back. He told me it went like this:
"I know someone in this house is involved with stealing our 4-wheeler. The detective has evidence, beer cans, fingerprints, and a neighbor saw you. We are ready to press charges but I wanted to give you a chance to make it right. There are a lot of complaints about you in the neighborhood and no one likes you. I don't think anyone cares if you party but you just need to tone it way down. Returning my wheels is a good way to redeem yourselves. And if any of you are on probation, it won't be a good thing for the police to be in your records. Not everyone is as nice as me and I feel sorry for you. I have two little kids and I don't want my two year old to be scared of thieves. I wanted to give you a chance before you are faced with the charge of a felony."
The three guys standing there (Spencer describes them as short and scrawny) didn't admit anything, but they didn't deny anything either. They seemed to totally agree with everything he said and promised to talk to their roommates (the scapegoats) that night.
Spencer came home a little more manly.
This morning, the wheels were on our front lawn.
Question 1: Who steals anyway?
Question 2: Who actually returns things they steal?
p.s. The new key cost $16 to make. I think this story could be in the Reader's Digest.

extremely interesting story- but even more interesting: spencer's outfit! he is the best...
Spencer you are crazy! Valerie Brown and I both agree that only you could have pulled that off. I'm actually really proud of you. Was it as scary as it sounds? Glad you're here to visit. Emily--come over too!
What a MAN! Way to go Spencer! This should go in Readers Digest.
Go Spencer!!!
That was the best story EVER!
Oh yeah, I wonder what they would have done if Ife had done the same thing. Funny to think about?!
Wow, I'm so proud of my brother! Although I might have gotten the wheels back by crying in front of the strangers and told them the 4 wheeler was supposed to be auctioned off for charity or something.
Next time I have something stolen, ie.. 2 bikes worth $500, I'm going to call Spencer "mak'em feel really bad" Patterson. $16 is alot cheaper than $50! Way to go Spence!!!! Dad Warr
WOW! That is our Spencer...I totally see him doing this! I just wish I could have seen his face when he saw those tires on the lawn in the morning! I bet he was like a kid at Christmas!
WOW Emily...all I can say is, WHAT A MAN! That Spencer is probably the most talented person I know. (Brock says he is REALLY Proud of his man spender) Thanks for the laughs. Who needs Detectives anyways?
Spencer...I wish I could have been there to help you solve crimes. I was very good at it on my mission. I could've used my detective skills to help you. Or you could just ask mom and she'll give you a couple more ideas.
I've decided Spencer is a lot like Spider man-
how funny is this.. made me laugh.. mostly your detail of the story down to his outfit for they day. you make me laugh. glad to hear detective spenc isn't afraid of anything
That is so great! I love your vivid account and yes, it should be in Reader's Digest!
Hahaha! That's awesome. I see that you guys are selling your house and leaving us at the mercy of our thieving neighbors. Where you guys headed?
That is the craziest thing ever! Spencer is constantly living such a zesty life! Todd marvels at the situations that boy has been in. I have to laugh, because they are so much alike! Thanks for the story!
Hey, would you mind emailing me your address? We went private...not sure what I think about it, but I can't invite you without it. Sorry for the pain! :)
The adventures of the Patterson's! You two could write a book or at least have a regular column in the newspaper. Good to see your cute family. We need to get together; it's been too long!
Okay, so I should totally read things through before I start making comments! Even if we can't get together, at least we can keep in touch! Congrats on the Master's Spencer!
I still can't believe this story. Of course it was fun listening to Chad tell the story :) Your little fam is so cute!
